Supporting Families on Their Child’s Autism Journey

April is National Autism Acceptance Month, a time to spotlight autism spectrum disorder (ASD) not just as a diagnosis, but as a lived experience filled with both challenges and triumphs. At Sadler Health Center, our providers offer more than just essential pediatric care – they also walk alongside families as they navigate the complex journey of finding the resources and support their child needs.

A Family’s Journey Often Begins in the Exam Room

“Autism affects how a child interacts with others, communicates and learns,” explains Katrina (Kat) Thoma, Sadler’s Director of Medical Services. “Often, parents or caregivers express concerns during a routine visit. When we observe behaviors that may indicate ASD, we refer families to specialists who can perform diagnostic screenings like the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT).”

Kat emphasizes the importance of early intervention. A timely diagnosis opens the door to services such as speech therapy, physical therapy and educational support – resources that can significantly improve a child’s development and long-term success. It can also lead to essential benefits like school accommodations and insurance coverage.

Supporting Families Every Step of the Way

Understanding what their child needs – and where to find help – can be overwhelming for parents. That’s where Sadler steps in.

“Our efforts are focused on supporting the entire family,” Kat says. “We talk with families about their child’s needs, provide resource lists and reach out to partner organizations on their behalf.

“We also work closely with our Behavioral Health team and Community Health Workers to offer services like mental health support, respite care and transportation for assessments. We’re here to help families access everything they need for their child’s overall development.”

Parental Tips for Supporting Children with ASD

Utilize Early Intervention Services: Early diagnosis and intervention can dramatically change the trajectory of your child’s development. If you have concerns, don’t wait – seek support sooner rather than later.

Create a Support Network: Surround yourself with supportive people, including health care providers, therapists and other parents. This network can provide both emotional support and practical advice.

Be Patient and Celebrate Small Wins: Every milestone, no matter how small, is significant. Celebrate progress and continue to encourage development in all areas of life.

Every Step Forward Matters

These holistic efforts have led to many inspiring success stories.

“I’ve had the privilege of watching many children with ASD grow and thrive,” Kat shares. “One child I treated loved military history, just like me. We bonded over that. When he transitioned to adult care, I remember him commenting that this would be the last time we would see each other and extending his hand to shake mine. He then pulled it back and said, ‘I think we should do more. I think we should hug.’ That moment spoke volumes about how much he had grown.”

In another case, Kat helped a family obtain funding for a $7,000 cubby bed to improve their child’s sleep and sensory processing. “Sleep is often one of the biggest challenges for kids with ASD and their parents,” she notes. “That child is now four-and-a-half years old and making amazing progress. Seeing how this changed their sleep – and their lives – was incredibly rewarding.”

The path to progress is gradual, made up of small but meaningful milestones.

“I always tell parents: every small step is progress toward a brighter future,” Kat says. “And I make sure they know that Sadler is here to walk alongside them through it all.”
